WISDOM TOOTH EXTRACTION

Wisdom tooth extraction is a common dental procedure recommended when wisdom teeth (3rd molars) cause problems or pose a risk to oral health.

When is it needed?

Wisdom tooth extraction is necessary in cases of:
  • Impacted wisdom teeth: when they have not fully erupted or are located below the gums
  • Partially erupted wisdom teeth: when they have not developed properly, leaving the area vulnerable to infections

  • Pressure on neighboring teeth: wisdom teeth can cause pain or movement of other teeth

  • Inflammations and infections: such as periapical inflammation (inflammation of the gums around wisdom tooth)

  • Tooth decay: due to its cleaning difficulty

Is wisdom tooth extraction painful?

The procedure itself is painless, thanks to the use of anesthesia.

After extraction, mild pain or swelling may occur, which is treated with:

  • Pain relievers

  • Ice application to the area for the first 24 hours

  • Proper nutrition and avoidance of hot foods or drinks.

Why is early wisdom tooth extraction important?

Prompt wisdom tooth removal may prevent:
  • Movements or wearing of neighboring teeth.

  • Painful inflammation or infections.

  • Complications such as cysts or bone damage. Surgical extraction in old age may have more complications.

INSTRUCTIONS AFTER EXTRACTION

PAIN
Pain may be present the first three days and then subsides.

In case you are in pain, you should take painkillers (paracetamol or non steroid anti-inflammatory). Depending your medical history and how difficult the whole process has been, your dentist will recommend respective analgesics.

Mild discomfort is completely normal to be felt the first days.

In case you are not relieved at all, you may contact your dentist.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

  • Do not smoke for the first 24hrs

  • Keep the open wound as passive as possible e.g. do not use a straw, do not suck the wound, do not spit etc.

ALL INSTRUCTIONS AFTER TOOTH EXTRACTION ARE PERSONALISED
AND SHOULD BE PROVIDED BY YOUR OWN DENTIST!

When should you contact your Dentist?

If you observe severe pain, extensive bleeding or swelling that does not subside, inform your dentist immediately.
